The Pilot Common Project (PCP) ATM Functionality 1 aims at optimising operations in Terminal Areas (TMA) through more precise planning and sequencing of arrival aircraft and more flexible flight routes based on Performance Based Navigation (PBN). An essential component is implementation of more fuel efficient and environmental friendly procedures compared to what is possible with traditional navigation.
An important implementation step is the results of the first phase (1a) of London Airspace Management Programme (LAMP) that went in operation on February 4th 2016. The most significant changes are:
• Introduction of a new “Point Merge” sequencing methodology for arrival to London City Airport avoiding holding.
• Aircraft departing London City to the south will be able to climb earlier reducing noise and CO2 emissions.
• Aircraft leaving Stansted to the south will use an easterly route from the airport during day, climbing more quickly reducing overall noise and CO2 emissions.
• Noise over land will be reduced from lower level flights in the Southampton and Bournemouth area by re-routing arrivals to fly over the sea in the Solent straight.
The changes cover an area from Stansted to the Island of Wight. Changes affects commercial aircraft using London City, Stansted, Luton, Southampton, Bournemouth, Northolt and Biggin Hill airports
